Live Green Festival Sydney 2008

August 19, 2008

There hasn’t been a more glorious Sunday inLive Green Festival 2008 Sydney in months, perfect for a trip to Victoria Park in Camperdown for the Live Green Festival.

Sitting on the grass in the sun with thousands of other Sydneysiders, with great Live Music and an almost Summery vibe in the air - the City of Sydney deserves a mountain of praise for putting together such a fabulous event.

Live Green was a celebration of all things Sustainable, Recyclable & Organic. With Seminars on Ethical Investing, Sustainable Seafood and how being Green is actually Cheaper than our outmoded wasteful way of living. It’s like something Sophie Ulliano from Gorgeous Green said to me recently, Green is just good old fashioned common sense. It’s not a new concept (although we do have many new ways to be Green) it’s almost like moving forward to the past. Read the rest of this entry »

3 Green Ways to Save Money on Petrol Today

May 30, 2008

Instead of collecting those 4c Off Vouchers & only filling your car on a Tuesday, here’s 3 ways you can save more each week.

Saving money on petrol costs has the added benefit of reducing your Carbon Emissions (your Carbon Footprint) & decreasing the demand for Oil.

The demand for petrol is putting us at the mercy of the daily fluctuations of Oil prices. Leaving us little choice but to purchase our petrol from the same Company we purchase our Groceries, or we miss out on that $2.50 a week saving (and really ladies…that’s what we’re saving on average.) Then there’s filling up on Tuesday during the ‘normal price fluctuation cycle’ (if I had a dollar for everytime I’ve heard that on the News.) Now the Service Stations have gotten wise to that fact that we’re onto their cycle & they’ve changed it. It’s now Wednesday before the prices drop & we’ve all filled up on Tuesday at 5c per litre more.

So, we’re at the mercy Petrol Prices.

Or are we?

I think NOT & here’s 3 ways you can get back in control of what you pay for petrol. Read the rest of this entry »

Blog Action Day - Reuse & Recycle

October 15, 2007

This is the day that you might feel another shift in the Universe. Just like when The Stern Report was published, Al Gore released ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ and Tim Flannery was named Australian of the Year. This is another major event that will ensure that environmental issues have a loud and very mainstream voice.

Climate Change is still the issue that affects us the most right now but I think that gets enough press and we all pretty much know what we need to do in our own lives to make the necessary changes. The concept of Reusing and Recycling is one we also need to embrace to slow down our dependence on resources.

Will Carbon Trading Save the World?

October 13, 2007

Firstly, congratulations on the Nobel Peace Prize to Al Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. I’d say he’s pretty damn happy he didn’t win that election now - I know I’d certainly rather be remembered for a Nobel Prize than Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

You Don’t Win Friends With Salad…or Global Warming

October 11, 2007

In the lead up to Blog Action Day this is the first of our posts on Environmental Issues.

Last year’s Stern Report on the economic cost of Climate Change gave many world leaders a whole new position on environmental issues. The realisation that they were not just talking to a bunch of treehuggers about the environment, but in fact most of the developed world was asking how they as leaders were planning to tackle the issues. The release of Al Gore’s film ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ added to public awareness of the disastrous implications of Global Warming. I don’t know if you felt it too but there was a massive shift - it was almost like you could feel our collective consciousness heave and all of a sudden Climate Change was everywhere.

I’ve purposely used two terms to describe the one thing in the above paragraph. Global Warming and Climate Change mean the same thing but they have two very different implications. Global Warming is a scary concept that brings to mind melting icebergs, Hurricane Katrina and Manhattan becoming Atlantis. Climate Change doesn’t really have that kind of emotional impact - not all of us like change but it’s often a gradual thing and we don’t always notice it. Seems to me this is why our leaders and the media use the term Climate Change when they want us to listen and act rationally and Global Warming when they want us to run for the hills in fear.

E String Re-useable Shopping Bags

September 22, 2007

I love my E String BagsCurrently, and climbing at a rate not unlike the speed of sound the number of plastic shopping bags in use just this year worldwide is:

363,145,968,124

Maybe the saying should go, ‘if I had a dollar for every plastic shopping bag…’ In Australia alone we consume on average 326 plastic bags per person per year.

I’m not trying to alarm anyone here, I’m just going to point out that there are some great alternatives to plastic bagColourful E String Bagss and E String Bags are just one of them. I’m mentioning E String Bags in particular as they are cheap, effective, colourful, roll up in a little ball when you’re not using them and they hold 14kg of shopping, all while looking really cool. They’re just a brilliant product all round and are available now on our secure shopping site.

If you would like to know the reality of what plastic shopping bags are doing to our planet then here is an eye-opening article from the United Nations Environment Program titled The World’s Largest Landfill is in the middle of the Pacific Ocean
